Reader Rides - Jeep Shots

writer: Pete Trasborg

Sunset XJ

We only wish that we'd get more shots like this one from Scott Mason of Richmond, Virginia. However, most of our sunsets are seen from inside the office- not out on a trail with a '92 Cherokee sporting a 3-inch lift with Pro Comp shocks in the front and Dakota rear leaf springs with Napa Gold shocks out back. To make those scenic overlooks more attainable, Scott put an Aussie Locker in the front Dana 30, and stuffed 32x11.50R15 BFG Mud Terrains around some 15x8 Cragar Soft 8s.

Beachin' TJ

This '00 Wrangler belongs to Mike Mische of Long Beach, California, and from the looks of things, he knows how to have fun wheeling his Jeep. This picture was taken in Moab, Utah, as were all the others he sent in. The 4-inch Rubicon Express short-arm lift provides clearance for the 33x12.50 Goodyear MT/R tires wrapped around 15x8 Eagle Alloy rims. He stuffed ARBs in the front and swapped-in rear Ford 8.8 axles, geared the Jeep to 4.56, and took it wheeling.

Mushroom Hunting Jeep

What happens when you take a '99 Wrangler with the stock 6-cylinder, automatic transmission, Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear with 4.11 gears and Auburn Ected Lockers out mushroom hunting? Well, if you are Jeff Conradson from Cadillac, Michigan, even though you've got a 3 1/2 inch Rubicon Express suspension lift and 33x12.50 Goodyear MT/R tires on 15x8 steel rims, you get to break out the winch and tow straps. No actual mushrooms were hurt in the creation of this photo.

Jeepin' Family

While we didn't get many specs from Ricky Leverett of Allegan, Michigan, we did get two pictures. Here, you can see (from left to right) his Jeepin' Family: an '02 Grand Cherokee, an '00 Wrangler, a '92 Wrangler with 7 inches of lift, 33s and Lock Rights front and rear, a '96 XJ with 8 inches of lift and 33s, and another '02 Grand Cherokee. Normally we wouldn't run a picture that wasn't out wheeling, but we did get a picture of the Leverett family from Aruba with four rental Jeeps parked on some remote beach with no signs of civilization to be seen anywhere, so we ran the picture that had the family and its Jeeps.

Scuba Shafted

He took a 6-year-old '91 Wrangler, completely restored it, painted it yellow, lifted it 6 inches with a Superlift lift kit, kept the 4.0L, AX15, front Dana 30, and rear Dana 35, added 35x12.50 Pro Comp Xterrain tires on 15x10 Mickey Thompson Classic rims, and what thanks was there? Well, according to Jody Hovey of St. Joseph, Michigan, a driveshaft that fell out in the middle of a water crossing. If that weren't enough, a grenaded Dana 35 was his thanks for swimming under the Jeep to fix the driveshaft issue. Still, he's had this Jeep for 10 years since that happened, so it's a keeper.

Beaver Ass ZJ

Special thanks to Cory Campbell of Burlington, Vermont, for such a colorful letter. Often, we have trouble making a title for Jeep shots, or issues with something unique to say. With phrases like "comfy heated seats" and "Jeep smells like beaver ass," we had no such issues. His '98 ZJ is his third Jeep and his favorite so far, even though he's only 18. The Jeep got a 4 1/2-inch BDS lift, KOR track bar conversion, 33x10.50R15 BFG Bajas on 15x8 steel wheels, a Hanson winch bumper, junk-yard sourced skid plates, and a mini snorkel, which comes in handy when fording beaver ponds that are 3-4 feet deep with soft, weedy bottoms.
